Can you drive a boxster in the snow
It cannot, and should not, be done without winter tires. It's extremely difficult to handle, I've had some light spins in low speed situations, none resulting in damage luckily, but scary nonethless.
Porsches can, with winter tires, be winter driven. It's actually quite common, and sales of winter tires for Porsche owners were significant. The driveability is absolutely there, and the cars are tested thoroughly in winter conditions by Porsche. That said, I would not drive on unplowed roads, I would not drive in heavy weather conditions unless absolutely necessary, and I would give myself a lot of distance.
With practice, it can definitely be done. To Zambrano's point, the newer model year Boxsters have glass rear windows, with defrosters. Early first generation Boxsters did have the plastic rear window, and that could be an absolute pain.
Best solution is to purchase a hard-top. Oh, and davejay is dead on wrt skinnier tires: winters should not be put on your stock wheels, you should be buying winter wheels and tires that are skinnier. Well, I owned a mildly overpowered RWD car in Chicago for a few years and really disliked the experience. I dont think there's any driver ability that will help you get out of a snowed in parking spot. My friends at the time tried weighing down the trunk and winter tires with varying results.
That said, once the roads were clean and relatively free of ice, it wasnt too bad. Its during a snowfall and the snow turning into ice period after thats the worst. If its garage kept and used as a second car, you'll be fine. Primary mode of transportation? Not so good. The Prius is FWD. The difference betwen FWD pulling, think horse and carraige and RWD pushing, think someone pushing you from behind in a midwestern winter is like night and day.
I don't know if space or other considerations are keeping you from the idea, but a winter beater is really the best plan. You can get mid- to full-size 10 to 20 year-old US sedans cheap and they make great winter machines. I've only driven RWD cars, but not a mid engine. I figured that having an engine block ontop of the rear tires would add a bit more oomph on the traction.

Posted November 30, Posted February 4, I know this is an old topic, but. Posted February 6, I drive mine in the winter and I love it.
Scarf on, top down, heaters on, smile away : I don't see any issue to be honest. When a wheel locks up it is no longer rotating, meaning it is sliding across the surface of the road and not generating any grip at all. The anti-lock brakes system helps in the snowy conditions as it allows the driver to apply their brakes hard and fast and the system will ensure that the wheels keep on rotating whilst maximizing the amount of brake pressure applied.
The Porsche Boxster does not have a snow mode; however, the traction control and four-wheel-drive system is extremely effective in providing the car with enough grip in snowy conditions. The Boxster is available to have snow gear installed. It is highly recommended to instal snow tires onto the Boxster in order to maximise the amount of grip that it has in slipper conditions.
These are various pieces of snow gear you can fit to a Porsche Boxster:. This means the Boxster can only handle light snow. If there is any snow deeper than inches, its recommended to avoid driving the Boxster through it.
The deeper snow can easily scratch or damage the bodywork of the fragile and expensive Porsche. In addition, if the Boxster comes across thick and compact snow it could become beached due to being so low to the ground. Please also read our article: Porsche in snow and winter driving. Porsche engineers its cars to the highest of quality and implements the latest technologies into their cars.
As such, the Boxster is great in low winter temperatures and will not have any problems. The four-wheel drive system and traction control will ensure that the car is stable and under control on slippery surfaces. A full tank of fuel helps with adding a bit of weight in slippery conditions.
I don't have a hard top and during sub zero weather, the top does rattle a bit more due to the extreme cold, but other than the rattles, there is little to complain about with the soft top in place. The heater will melt your feet after the car is warmed up fully, so that's a non issue. These Boxsters are good winter cars. I would suspect a 4x4 vehicle with better ground clearance and a really good set of name brand dedicated snow tires would be a better vehicle when heading out in that 12" blizzard, but that vehicle could get pretty boring when the weather turns better!
Did I mention good snow tires are everything on these cars? Last edited by Jay H; at PM.. The boxster brakes give a better pedal fell and have virtually no flex because they are a monoblock design, radially mounted. They dont require as much maintenance and you could use your factory rotors with them which will be cheaper when it comes to replacement. I really like the boxster setup, calipers can be found on ebay or Pelican parts and the carriers can be found at Pure motorsports along with lines.
The cars I drove with both these setup were tracked. The owner that upgraded from wilwood to boxster says he is much more happy now with the brake performance, he also said that his brake pedal is right at the top and stays there for a complete day of lapping and the pedal is more consistant.
Hope this helps. I had a little issue this weekend, I think it was driver error though! All times are GMT The time now is PM. Boxster and winter User Name. Remember Me? Garage Garage.
